Why You Should Stop Using Chat GPT to write your copy (and do this instead)
The business world is waking up to the fact that AI-generated writing sounds exactly like…. well, that. And it’s not doing you any favours because it doesn’t reflect who you are as a unique, human biz owner with specific offers to help other souls.
Ready for some tough love? Read on because it’s time to step away from AI…
If you’re a soul-led entrepreneur who’s fallen down the slippery slope of feeding AI your content, its doing you more harm than good.
Giving ChatGPT your prompts to write your emails, website copy, blogs, or social media content saves you a butt-load of time- but at what cost?
It’s not real. You’re not being authentic; it’s dishonest to your reader. Real people are sitting on their couches, curled up with coffee, reading your AI-generated blog- thinking you wrote it!
Fellow humans are on their commute to work, scrolling your story, taking to heart what you have to say- except it’s not really your heart, is it? Don”t they deserve more?

What’s the difference between AI generated content and your writing?
Do you know how the first AI machine was created? By feeding it all the written information on the subject.
If the subject was motorbikes, the AI trainers gathered all available written sources, from user manuals to magazines to history books about Harley-Davidson. So when you give AI a simple prompt about motorbikes, you may get a ton of information, but it will most likely lack context, and depth.
However, you can train your AI to give you data in context if you give it clear, detailed instructions on what you want it to do and why.
But there’s one more thing it’s lacking- and this one thing it can never have: Human perception of meaning.
Human perception of meaning
From the moment you’re a baby, you’re experiencing and observing the world. Let’s say a 1-year-old sees a goldfish in a bowl at a playdate. It’s orange, it wriggles around, and it lives in water. She’s learnt that fish are gold and live alone in bowls as pets in someone’s home.
Then, when they are 3 years old, they go to the pet shop with dad and see many, many brightly coloured fish in a wall of tanks- not just goldfish but tropical fish. She learns that fish come in many varieties and can be bought at pet stores.
Next, the same child goes to the Oceanarium when she is 5, and, mind blown, she learns that not only can you have a goldfish in a bowl, but that the sea exists and is full of fish and other creatures wilder than she ever could have imagined.
The fish example is to demonstrate how we, as humans, perceive meaning through layers. We experience something in the world in one way. Then we take that information, and the next time we experience the same thing but in another way, and another… adding layers of information, and expanding our experience. We end up with a deep, beautiful understanding of something in the world that is uniquely ours.
Someone else’s experience of fish will be totally different, so we all see fish differently. We all end up with unique perceptions of the meanings of things in the world. And AI cannot give you meaning in this way. It can only spit out a 2d perception of a topic.

So the moral of the story is that when AI writes your content and copy, it will lack your beautiful, human, unique perspective. And THIS is what your readers will connect with.
Give the people what they want- your own take on the world through your own writing.
You’re losing your creativity
I know it’s so tempting to use Chat to write that email or that sales page- because creative writing is a lot of hard work- trust me, I’m a copywriter, I know!
You have to research, read, take a walk, look at art, and go over your notes app on your phone for that random idea you had the other day.. And all of this takes time, so of course, it’s quicker to use AI.
Sometimes the hardest part about writing is just sitting down at your computer to start. But once you do start…. Oh, the magic of storytelling. The hooks that draw in the reader. The funny anecdotes that get your audience smiling. Painting a picture with words to set the scene so your story lands.
Then there’s writing of calls to action that are persuasive and make your reader want to work with you because YOU- and the words that came from your heart, have touched theirs in some way.
Getting Chat to write that article for you might save you time, but the more you use AI to write for you, the more these creative skills dry up, and the harder it is to use them again.
Don’t let AI steal your creativity- take back your power, because your creativity is really the best thing you have to give to the world.
Your Chat GPT copy sounds off and your audience knows it
AI-curated content will always sound a bit weird. And people are waking up to it. From the em-dash to the rocket emoji, we can now tell the difference between writing from Chat and quality creative human writing.
AI writing is always going to sound a bit off because, as we’ve discussed, it’s drawing on a ton of information from different genres, mixing them up, and spitting out a result that is clunky af to read and has no personality.
This is because a) it has learned its subject from a mishmash of academic texts, college essays, and magazine gossip columns, and b) it isn’t a human writer with a rich life experience who has done research because they really care about the subject.
AI can’t connect with your human audience because it cannot empathize with what life is really like for them. It hasn’t rushed home from the gym before the kids’ school bus in (me!). It hasn’t left a red sock in with its white wash and felt the rage of pink bedsheets (also me!).
AI can explain something with words, but it can’t convey the real feeling behind it- so it will never draw in your readers like your own authentic writing.

Be brave and dare to write again
It’s time to ditch the AI and be brave enough to stare at a blank Word doc again. It’s time to write stories and touch hearts again. Doesn’t your email list deserve that much!?
I dare you to ditch the Bots and go back to the raw, slow, and sometimes painful process of real writing. Make mistakes. Edit. Start again.
And I promise you, your audience will thank you for it. Because your loyal followers show up to hear from YOU. YOU are the brand they want to hear from, and you have an ethical responsibility to deliver.
An AI trained assistant won’t do what a human copywriter can- AKA care!

Is there a place for AI in your business?
There has to be. AI is here, and it’s not going anywhere. Yesterday I sat in a lecture on using AI in your business- and it was excellent. I learnt a lot.
Then the teacher told me that the lecture slides we were watching were made by Gemini, a popular AI generator- and she lost me.
Because I don’t want to live in a world where everything is written by a computer. But is it going to just make the rich richer, use too much water, and speed up the destruction of the planet?
Only time will tell.
